THE OAKLAND FULL MARATHON COURSE TO BE REROUTED
The full marathon course of the 2022 Oakland Running Festival has been rerouted to reduce the number of intersections and accommodate the amount of available police officers. Marathon participants will now run two loops of the half-marathon course to make up their 26.2-mile route.
“While this is not what we wanted to occur, we understand the challenges that Oakland city services are currently experiencing,” said Lee Corrigan, President of race organizer Corrigan Sports Enterprises. “We discussed several alternative coverage options with the city, but first responder shortages are occurring across the region. This change allows marathoners to still compete and is our best option under the circumstances. We will continue to work closely with the Oakland Police Department and Oakland City Hall to deliver a safe and fun race for all.”
The new route is sanctioned by USATF and remains a Boston qualifying opportunity. In fact, it will be less total elevation than the original course. With more centralized staff and course support it will be a safe andcheer-full experience for all runners.
Other than the route change, no other adjustments are required to the race day activities. The full marathon and 10k will start at 7am. The 5k will start at 7:30 and the half-marathon will start at 9am.
