Oakland Marathon to Become First Running Event to ruR on the Bay Bridge
Oakland, CA (October 4, 2018) — Corrigan Sports Enterprises (CSE) has announced today the 10th annual Oakland Marathon, taking place on March 24, 2019, will be the first running event in history to traverse the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
The marathon and team relay route will cross the Bay Bridge via the pedestrian path across the East Span, turn around at Yerba Buena Island, and return on the pedestrian path back towards Oakland.
“With 2019 marking the event’s 10th anniversary, we wanted to deliver a ‘must run’ experience to attract runners from across the country,” says Lee Corrigan, President of CSE and Executive Director of the Oakland Running Festival. “The support from the Oakland running community has been amazing since the festival’s inception in 2010 and the cooperation from state and city agencies made the dream of traversing the Bay Bridge come to fruition.”
The Oakland Running Festival offers distances to runners of all ages and abilities. The festival consists of a marathon, half marathon, four-person team relay, and Bank of the West 5K.
“Oakland offers amazing beauty throughout its eclectic neighborhoods, natural beauty of its parks and Lake Merritt, as well as its vibrant culture and iconic architectural structures,” says Mark Everton, CEO of Visit Oakland. “The new marathon course encapsulates all of these, and the spectacular views of Oakland from the Bay Bridge alone will make for a truly memorable run.”
Members of the team relay will also get to have the opportunity to run across the Bay Bridge. The leg two runner will travel west, across the bridge to the relay exchange point on Yerba Buena Island where the leg three runner will take over and head back over the bridge toward Oakland.
The half-marathon and 5K courses will be mostly unchanged from their 2018 routes.
With the bridge portion of the course being approved by all county jurisdictions, the entire marathon course is currently being reviewed and measured for USATF certification. Race officials plan to publish all courses and maps before the end of the year.
