Running for a Better Oakland Youth Program

Running for a Better Oakland (RBO) is a non-profit organization that encourages Kindergarten-12th grade Oakland students to develop healthy lifestyles through running. By providing training and encouragement, RBO helps students build confidence and set goals, giving them tools for achievement and hard work they can draw on in all areas of their lives.
RBO strives to build a tolerant, healthy, and prosperous community. Through the discipline and rigor of a structured running program, RBO’s goal is to create new relationships, establish trust, build self-esteem, and empower students, parents, and volunteers.

Program Overview
Running for a Better Oakland provides students with everything they need to train and succeed in local races like the Oakland Marathon. In the Spring, our volunteer run mentors train alongside our students in practices by Lake Merritt and then run alongside them in local races. Every year over 200+ Oakland youth, run mentors & coaches participate in the 5K (3.1 Miles) or 10K (6.2 Miles) at the Oakland Marathon. The program, including training, is free to participate in.
RBO also manages the Middle School Cross-Country League for Oakland Athletic League during the Fall, providing a full season of high-quality races to OUSD students including a Championship Meet. Last year, over 150 runners from 9 different OUSD schools participated in the league!
Who This is For
Youth looking to challenge themselves to a longer distance (5K or 10K) beyond the Saturday Eat. Learn. Play. Kids Fun Run presented by Kaiser Permanente (quarter mile to a mile).
