Event Art & Merchandise

New for 2024 is the introduction of our Artist program which features a local artist to produce a unique piece of artwork that will adorn participant medals and shirts.

2024 Finisher's Collection

Designed by brothers Mahader and Yonas Tesfai, Eritrean-born siblings and Bay Area artists, have crafted a striking medal and shirt artwork for the 2024 Oakland Marathon, marking over twenty years of their artistic contributions. Their design is an immersive story in metal, intertwining Mahader’s intricate etchings with Yonas’ bold, illustrative strokes.

The medal features a runner in motion, framed by a dynamic circular motif that echoes the energy of the marathon. The skyline in the background and the design of the ribbon both draw from the exquisite beadwork patterns found in Ohlone basketry.

This medal isn’t just a finisher’s trophy; it’s a wearable piece of art that sparks dialogue, celebrating both the runners’ achievements and the enduring spirit of the Ohlone people. It represents the Tesfai brothers’ vision of art as a unifying force, blending athletic celebration with a salute to the diverse cultures of Oakland.
